It is a fair question before you spend money on something braided from cord: how long is it actually going to last hanging in a hot cab, getting grabbed every time you climb in? Here is the straight answer, including the things that shorten a handle's life.
How strong is it?
Genuine Type III 550 paracord is 100% nylon, about 4mm across, and has a breaking strain of roughly 250kg per strand. A grab handle is braided from many strands and bolted at both ends, so the cord itself is not the weak point in normal use. The name comes from the 550 pound rating of the original military spec cord. Sun
Australian UV is the hardest thing on any interior. Nylon paracord holds its colour far better than cheap polyester cord, but nothing left in direct sun for years stays exactly the shade it started. Handles mounted on the pillars and roof, which is where they usually go, sit out of the worst of it. Dashboard mounted straps get more sun and will fade sooner. Darker colours and black hold up longest, neons and pastels shift first. If colour matters, that is worth knowing when you choose.
Water and mud
Nylon does not absorb water the way cotton does, so paracord handles dry quickly and are mildew resistant. They will not rot. Mud and dust work into the braid over time and make it feel gritty, which is a cleaning job, not a replacement job. What actually wears a handle out
Three things. Grit worked into the braid and left there, which slowly abrades the outer cord. Loops rubbing directly on a screw head without a washer, which is why we suggest washers on every mount. And a handle that was the wrong length to begin with, pulled tight over the mounts, which stresses the loops every time it is used. Measure properly and fit washers and you have removed two of the three.
So how long?
We are not going to give you a number in years, because a handle on a farm ute in western Queensland and a handle on a weekend Prado in Melbourne live very different lives. What we can tell you is that the cord is rated far beyond what a grab handle sees, the braid is hand tied tight so it does not loosen or go spongy, and the failure points people worry about (rot, snapping, coming undone) are not what we see. What we see is fading over years in harsh sun and grit if a handle is never cleaned. Both are manageable. Keep it clean, use washers, and expect a paracord grab handle to be a long term part of the vehicle, not a seasonal replacement.
When to replace
Replace a handle if the outer braid is visibly frayed through to the core, if a loop is cut, or if it has stretched to the point it feels loose on the mounts.
